Preparatory Action of the JRC – Innovation for Place-based Transformation
A project funded by the European Parliament to explore how to apply transformative innovation to local challenges.
Goal of the project:
- Extend the knowledge generated around transformative innovation and collected in the JRC-European Commission ActionBOOK, through a shared learning process.
- To accompany specific regions in "experimentation itineraries" for the application of transformative innovation methodologies adapted to a specific demand.
- Facilitate spaces for dialogue and collaboration between regions and experts for mutual learning.
What can you learn:
How to apply the latest innovation methodologies in practice, adapted to local capabilities and needs.
I3 Instrument Support Mechanism
European Commission programme -DG Regio- to support interregional innovation investments (I3 instrument)
Goal of the project:
- Connects capabilities and needs from different regions to create new value chains, especially for SMEs.
- Bringing scientific knowledge and existing technologies closer to the market by funding market-ready innovation projects.
- It facilitates interregional cooperation and the mobilization of strategic resources, connecting more and less developed regions.
- Training in specific skills for innovation policy managers.

How to coordinate different actors and territories to generate collective benefits, improving access to innovative markets for our SMEs
S3 Community of Practice
DG Regio initiative to strengthen the implementation of smart specialisation strategies (S3) in Europe.
Goal of the project:
- Facilitate spaces for collective learning and collaboration between regions around S3.
- Create thematic platforms for in-depth study in vertical areas of specialisation shared by different regions.
- Generate specialised knowledge about regional strategies (S3 Observatory).
- Grant expert support projects for analysis and recommendations to regions on an individual basis.
What can you learn:
How to apply S3 methodologies step by step, balancing theory and practice, and mobilising key stakeholders.
